Big History

The incredibly complex story of our universe. Everyone needs to see this.

Also check out the website: http://www.bighistoryproject.com/
"Each history offers valuable insights. Together, they reveal even more. Big history weaves evidence and insights from many scientific and historical disciplines into a single, accessible origin story – one that explores who we are, how we got here, how we are connected to everything around us, and where we may be heading."

Seth Godin

This wouldn't be a marketing blog without Seth Godin. Literally type "Marketing Guru" in google and Seth Godin is the second link.

This is his TED presentation-entitled, "The Tribes We Lead." He offers some great advice on how to lead a movement.

Sound Bites
What leaders have in common;
1. They challenge the status quo.
2. They build a culture.
3. They have curiosity.
4. They connect people.
5. They have charisma.
6. They commit to their cause.

Blogging

I've always thought of blogging as a lame attempt for people to share their feelings and views. Feelings in which most of the time I don't think anyone else cares about. I'm actually surprised that people check my blog for instance. Not because I think that what I have to say isn't relevant or interesting, I just doubt it is worth anyone's time- being that we all have such different tastes and interests.

For me blogging is about documenting my moments of inspiration, maybe even profound moments. Mostly I  just like to have a trail of my thought process, and to keep track of things that interest me. A lot of the time I find myself embarrassed that people know I have a blog; usually justifying why utilizing social media is important in this day in age. Really I just like to blog for me. I'm passionate about a lot of things and I make no apologies.

It gives my future employers a sense of my Flava and hell maybe it even interests people.

Thas'all for my grappling with blogging.

Strong is Beautiful

I love this new campaign by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

I think a huge reason that the professional women's soccer league folded was due to their lack of marketing. They didn't generate enough interest and involvement, therefore they had no money coming in the door. Someday I am going to reinstate the professional Women's Soccer league.

Way to be WTA.

Churchill

This is my wonderful and beautiful friend's band - Churchill.

Great song.

Nailed it. Work done by the creative agency TBWA.

I think I would be pretty stoked on a fridge full of beer too.

AT&T

One of my first posts was T-mobile's life is for sharing campaign, where they would flash mob famous metros, airports, and train stations. I think this is a creative and funny rebuttal by AT@T.'

Want the Change

This poem was sent to me by me wonderful mother. I repeat it in times of sadness, in moments of change.

The Sonnets to Orpheus, Part Two, XII

Want the change. Be inspired by the flame
where everything shines as it disappears.
The artist, when sketching, loves nothing so much
as the curve of the body as it turns away.

What locks itself in sameness has congealed.
Is it safer to be gray and numb?
What turns hard becomes rigid
and is easily shattered.

Pour yourself out like a fountain.
Flow into the knowledge that what you are seeking
finishes often at the start, and, with ending, begins.

Every happiness is the child of a separation
it did not think it could survive. And Daphne, becoming
a laurel,
dares you to become the wind.

These slides list the top 100 trends to look out for in 2011, according to the account planners at JWT Worldwide. I should probably take notes!

The Girl Effect

Such a powerful movement. Young girls taking matters into their own hands. This is an important cause, an important message.

Child in Red- Rainer Maria Rilke

This fits my mood today. I love Rainer Maria Rilke, always speaks to the heart of it.

CHILD IN RED

Sometimes she walks through the village in her
little red dress
all absorbed in restraining herself,
and yet, despite herself, she seems to move
according to the rhythm of her life to come.

She runs a bit, hesitates, stops,
half-turns around...
and, all while dreaming, shakes her head
for or against.

Then she dances a few steps
that she invents and forgets,
no doubt finding out that life
moves on too fast.

It's not so much that she steps out
of the small body enclosing her,
but that all she carries in herself
frolics and ferments.

It's this dress that she'll remember
later in a sweet surrender;
when her whole life is full of risks,
the little red dress will always seem right.

It Gets Better Project

Such a powerful movement. Not to mention a great use of the web. The support is overwhelming, so many well-known figures have joined the cause (including the President!). I hope this messages reaches the right kids. High School is hard and they are not alone, It Gets Better!

Make the Pledge.

Poolball by Budweiser.

Budweiser's viral marketing campaign includes inventing a new game, or well combining two existing games. I hope this takes off because I want to play so bad!! Genius, Budweiser.

GE Past and Present

50 year gap between these GE commercials. The first one has a slogan of “live better electrically,” the commercial sings you can have your cake and eat it too. I was listening to an NPR segment, saying this was essentially propaganda convincing people to use a lot of electricity (to make lives easier) and to spike electricity bills, win for GE.

Jump from 1957 to 2007 and we definitely had our cake, ate it too and now there is nothing left. On a positive note big corporations PR depends on social and environmental consciousness, which is awesome.

Social Vending

Especially for well-established brands like Pepsi and Coke, marketing is about creating a movement. They have the chance and the resources to think outside of the box. Creative marketing is the reason they maintain a dominant market-share. Pepsi and Coke are reaching out to the consumer in a proactive way, getting them involved and giving them something to talk about.

This is the latest from Pepsi’s and Coke’s, what I like to call, social movement campaigns.
